Mummy When I Grow Up...

"Mummy, when I grow up, I am going to be a Princess". Little girls have always played princess games, dressing up in little gowns and crowns with make believe castles and a Prince Charming.  "You will always be my little Princess" says mummy.

What does it mean to be a Princess? Does the rags to riches fairytale-like scenario actually exist? The Cinderella story has enchanted the world since as far back as the 1st century BC. It is the tale of a young beautiful girl who captures the heart of the Prince Charming and in marriage she becomes Princess Royal and they all live happily ever after.

A Princess in days gone by was a figure role, representing wealth and a way for aristocratic families to form alliances. In the royal line, a princess could only become Queen should there be no male counterpart where the Prince would become the King.

In a world where status is becoming so overwhelmingly important, the meek and humble look to figure heads and role models for inspiration and guidance. This was very much the case when Diana, Princess of Wales became known as 'The People's Princess'. She was someone people adored and worshiped. There is now a gap in the market...

We find ourselves back in a situation with special shoes to be filled, not one pair but two... Two of the world's most eligible bachelors are soon to be off the market; in Monaco, HSH Prince Albert ll is to marry Charlene Wittstock, a former Olympic champion swimmer from South Africa and in England, the second heir to the throne, Prince William (Charles and Diana's first born) is to marry Kate Middleton. Both are young and beautiful women, true and special in their own right, but they do not however have a royal blood flowing through their veins or an aristocratic background. They both share a common ground of where they have very big shoes to fill. In the case of Monaco, Charlene has Princess Grace Kelly as her spectre and the image of Diana, Princess of Wales, will shadow Kate for quite some time until...

It has to be decided what their roles will be and how they will play it. Women all around the world will look to them, follow them, imitate their style, their manor and their wedding dresses. Already Princess fever has exploded. Both Kate and Charlene are to be married in the Spring and Summer of 2011 respectively. Wow! To have to buy one hat for a special wedding is marvellous but two... is stupendous! Here's a question? Will Charlene guest at Kate's wedding and vice-versa? Will we have the two Princesses competing for the spotlight?

But in a world where women are becoming more and more inspirational and their supremacy admirable, we hope that their shoes fit like a glove and both the future Princess Charlene and Princess Kate will live a life rich with significance and help to turn the turbulent tides that threaten us and inspire us with rays of sunshine to brighten our days, and of course we hope, like the fairy tales, they live happily ever after with their Prince Charming. We women need and love role models and who better than a Princess or two.
