Love Those Gloves
Gloves have always been worn as a garment to protect the hands as well as being a fashion item. Throughout history gloves have been associated with many customs and traditions. In the 1100's Glovers of Perth in England established themselves as a company and became renowned across Europe.
Whilst labourers would wear tough sturdy leather gloves, the gentry had gloves designed for them using finer leathers such as doeskin and kid. It was from the 1500's that fabrics such as silk, satin, velvet, cotton, and linen were introduced and became quite fashionable. The higher classes would have gloves adorned with fringes, stones and other jewels.
In the 1600s, ladies and gentlemen of Court would wear perfumed gloves. These gloves were sometimes known as sweet gloves.
Today there is such a variety of gloves made in various fabrics and colours, long, short, fingerless, and is much as important for protection from the cold as well as being worn as a fashion accessory.
With people living in different countries, it is still an item of clothing that can be easily sent to friends and family as gifts. And you can never have to many pairs of gloves. We found 4 lovely pairs to feature on The Riviera Woman.
