Succeed In 2010

Succeed in 2010

Did you end last year determined that the New Year would be better? That this would be the year when you get it together and achieve all the things you've always wanted? In this article we'll check back to some key aspects which need to be in place so you can move forward successfully.

We're now at the end of the first month of the New Year; not a bad time to reflect and see how we're doing so far.   On January 1st did you make the same resolutions you make every year - to change job, lose weight, do more sport, give up smoking, sign up for an Italian  class…?  How many of your resolutions have you kept?     The chances are that your answer will be that those recurring resolutions, made in the enthusiasm of the moment as we passed from 2009 to 2010, have not been met.  They are still great goals, so what gets in the way of our achieving them? Normally, it's because we just don't want it enough (whatever the 'it' may be for you).   If we're going to make those strides forward this year ,we have to feel not only motivated but confident that we are going in the right direction for us and that we have what it takes to get there.

So let's take this opportunity to systematically and logically lay the foundations of confidence, beginning by reviewing some of the aspects we covered in Career Woman articles in 2009 (and if you weren't with us last  year, here's your chance to catch up).

Career Women

It's a three step process:

Step 1 Ask yourself these questions about 2009:

1.    What three things did I do last year that I was especially proud of?
2.    What did I learn about myself from this?
3.    Which of my successes would I like to duplicate in 2010?

Step 2 Review the list of positive qualities you have kept safely somewhere and add any new qualities. If you don't already have a list, make one now. Remember to list:

"    At least 10 positive things about yourself
"    No negatives
"    No qualifying words like 'most of the time' 'sometimes' etc!

Step 3 Review your list of transferable skills or write one now. These are the skills you've gained from jobs, volunteer work, hobbies, sports, and other life experiences and some examples from all women's lives -  are having the ability to:

"    Plan and arrange events and activities
"    Delegate tasks to others
"    Communicate clearly and effectively
"    Manage time
"    Repair equipment or machinery
"    Handle complaints

These three simple steps will put you in a good place to plan your next move, whether that's to change jobs, to start a business, to go back to full-time study, to become freelance, to get that promotion, to retire early……  you know the basics of what you have to offer and can build on this when you set your goals for the year.

And to give you a start …why not think about where you want to be this time next year?  Visualise yourself at the end of 2010/beginning 2011 -where are you working? What are you doing? How much are you earning? Where are you living? Who is around you?  Really put yourself in the situation and see what comes up for you. You may be surprised!!

If you want a more in-depth review of last year and to set your goals for 2010, email me kate@movingforwardyourway.com  for a free 6-page booklet full of activities!

Best of luck,

Kate
