Monaco's Yachting World Expands

View of Port Hercules from new YCM constuction

Bernard D’Alessandri and his team welcomed the press for a convivial lunch and a presentation on the Yacht Club of Monaco (YCM), followed by a visit of the new clubhouse being built to the highest quality environmental standards (HQE). A building slender as the liners that used to cruise between England and America in the early 20th century, with four floors all linked by. a monumental spiral staircase will link an exhibition hall, ballroom, swimming pool and terrace, a library, fitness room and five spacious cabins for guests on stopovers.

For more than 700 years the Principality’s fortunes are tied to the sea, making it possible to build on its economy, industry, tourism and leisure activities.  The first regattas in the bay of Monaco date from 1862, and later in 1988 the Regattas Association was created. But it was on May 19, 1953 that HSH Prince Rainier III founded what is still today the Yacht Club of Monaco and will soon celebrate its 60’s anniversary.  When HSH Prince Albert became the President of the YCM he helped develop the sporting side of the club by creating new international events. The ports are integrated into the life of the Principality and the YCM is at its centre with 1300 members representing 60 nationalities, 70% of which are yacht owners, and 1061 boats bearing the YCM pavilion, and 159 captains of boats larger than 40m. The club is an active living space with a sailing division for youngsters and adults alike, international sailing events, theme parties for members, yachting conferences, bringing together owners of classic or period yachts for the Belle Classe events, and much more. The new Lord Norman Foster-designed state-of-the-art building will be inaugurated during the members traditional summer cocktail in June 2014, marking another important moment in the history of this prestigious symbol of Monaco.
