Monaco Wins the Davis Cup First Round

On a clear Mediterranean Sunday Benjamin Balleret won his singles match in four sets securing the victory for Monaco in their first tour of the Davis Cup, group II within the Euro-African zone. Ignatik from Belarus, in spite of being the younger and better ranked player, could not stop the dominant performance of the Monegasque. Both men played a match full of quality and emotion, but it was Balleret who was the best man on the court, playing a superb match, and who was in top form in spite of having played 3 days in a row.

Paul Masseron (Minister of Interior) and Baroness Elisabeth-Ann the Massy (President of the Monegasque Tennis Federation) were among the many fans who encouraged the home team with loud cheers every step of the way. In the second round of the Davis Cup, Monaco will be facing Latvia and will probably take place at the Monte-Carlo Country Club during April 5-7, before the Rolex Tennis Masters.

While the men were battling themselves, on a neighbouring court Caroline Wozniacki, ranked 11 by the WTA (Women Tennis Association), was training hard for the upcoming clay season. The Danish top player who resides in Monaco was born into a family of top athletes, with her father playing professional football and her mother playing volleyball for the Polish national team. Her boyfriend is golf pro Rory Mcilroy, who is No.1 in the world and both were seen working out in the gym at the Monte-Carlo Country Club this weekend.
