MINDFULNESS

Mindfulness based Stress reduction is the largest and best known stress reduction programme in the world

Mindfulness training was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn,at the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre over 25 years ago. It has benefited people suffering from stress, stress-related conditions and chronic pain as well as many others whose needs were less acute but who sought a better understanding of the self and an improved quality of life. Jon Kabat-Zinn is author of (amongst others) `Full Catastrophe Living`, `Wherever You Go There You Are` and `Mindfulness Meditation In Everyday Life` in which he says “Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally. There is nothing cold, analytical or unfeeling about (mindfulness). The overall tenor of mindfulness practice is gentle, appreciative and nurturing. Another way to think of it would be heartfulness”

This technique has been taught to over 17,000 participants at the medical centre of the University of Massachusetts in Boston and is now frequently recommended by uk doctors to patients with depression and other stress related illnesses.

In mindfulness training one develops a warm and kindly curiosity to whatever happens in the mind. This stimulates the part of the brain which is responsible for active renewal, greater overall health and increased happiness. We are now operating in a part of the brain that allows us to respond to a situation with choice rather than react automatically and while we are still `feeling beings` we are less and less a slave to our moods and emotions and to the physiological havoc that they can cause.

Mindfulness is keeping attention where you want it and being aware.
Mindfulness is not about trying to get somewhere. Rather, it is simply being aware of where you are, how you are and allowing yourself to be that.

It is suitable for anyone of any belief system and courses are available worldwide.
