Woman On The Waves
Captain Sue Watson
Growing up in Fareham, Hampshire must have given Sue a passion for the sea. From dinghy sailing as a child, Sue now rotates as Captain and First Officer aboard a 55 metre charter yacht.
When did you start sailing?
I went sailing in a dinghy when I was ten years old, then later I had a boyfriend who had a boat and I used to go sailing with him and other yachting friends.
How long did it take you to get your Captain's licence?
It took a while as I was away at sea a lot of the time. I would sit various exams when I was in port, sometimes in England, sometimes not. It was while I was working on a yacht that the captain suggested I take the qualifications.
What do you sail in now?
I rotate between First Officer and Captain on a 55 metre charter boat, but I can oversee vessels up to 3,000 tonnes.
What are the most memorable places you've been to?
The Galapagos Islands and in complete contrast, Alaska.
Have you ever been sea-sick?
Fortunately, only twice, it really would be an occupational hazard if I was!
What do you miss most when you're at sea?
Being able to go for a walk
What do you miss most when you're on land?
I miss moving from place to place all the time
What makes a female yacht captain different from a male?
We all give 110%, paying attention to detail and making sure every aspect of the journey goes as smoothly as possible. We all have different ways of doing things, irrespective of gender.
Is your job demanding?
It is the same as in any profession, the ultimate responsibility lies with me, I'm in charge of the passengers, the crew and, of course, the boat.
Is yours the perfect job?
Like all jobs, it has pro's and con's, I miss family and friends when away, but being paid to travel around the world is absolutely wonderful.
