An Interview With...
Julia Edgely
I was keen to learn more about 'Homeopathy' and the girl behind 'Vie4Vitality'. Julia gave me an insight to her work and into a very special event happening on 24th November. |
Q1. What is homeopathy, for those who do not know about its benefits?
Homeopathy is a holistic system of medicine. The central philosophy is “similia similibus curantur”, which translates into “like cures like”. By using a minute dose of a natural substance, which can cause physical symptoms in crude form, the body’s own healing system is stimulated, leading to improved health and vitality. When I explain this to patients I give an example of a cut on the surface of the skin which will heal itself, the whole body has this inbuilt healing mechanism. When treating with homeopathy, we look for ways to stimulate this ability or in cases of chronic patients, why this ability is being hindered.
Homeopathy treats the cause rather then simply just the effect. There is a cause for everything, and everyone can think of something in their life that has changed them in some way, a turning point. When analysing your case, a homeopath will look for a cause, or aetiology. They will create a timeline of your medical history. Examples can be operations, accidents, traumas and emotional stresses. This is one reason for the healing crisis that some patients have experienced. As the cause is treated the body has more vitality to over come the resulting symptoms, as a patient you will experience more energy but your ailment can be slightly aggravated. This is short lived and so will pass quickly.
Anyone, from any age group, can benefit from Homeopathy, as it treats the person rather than the disease. Remedies are safe, natural and families can be taught to use its benefits in the home.
Q2. Did you have to train a long time and where did you train?
There are various paths out there for people who would like to train in homeopathy. For those who would like to become a professional homeopath, with the view of going into practice, the 4 year degree or licenciate course is the way to go. Each college is different in their approach to training, being either purely classical or practical, these are different methods of anayses and use remedies. Both methods have their benefits to patients. I trained in the Centre for Homeopathic Education, which offers their students training in both approaches. From this, I feel I have the best of both worlds and the tools to deal with people's health in today's society. I initially trained in the 4 year licentiate course. Training not only involved homeopathic philosophy but also anatomy and physiology, nutrition, counselling, modern holistic health, and introduction to herbalism and Chinese medicine for homeopaths. Once I had finished my course and set up my practice, my college was granted degree accreditation, which is rare for homeopathy. I was then able to top up my qualification to degree which invoved training in clinical research. Although 5 years seems a long time for some, I definitely feel its benefits in practice. I began my clinical training in 2nd year of studying so I felt prepared to see clients once qualified and my education in research means I can now keep up to date with new therapies and research.
Q3. What brought you to France Julia?
Before France I was living in London. I had moved there for my training in homeopathy. I was one of those rare people who did not settle in London well. I love going back there for weekends and the shopping! However coming from Dublin and living beside the sea most of my life, London never felt like home. After two years, my partner, who is an osteopath, had found out the laws had changed for osteopathy in France, which meant that osteopaths trained outside France could now work here. We saw this as a great opportunity for us and so we decided to move to the south of France to set up a multidisciplinary practice, like those found in the UK and Ireland. I feel more at home here than London and having our own practice is great.
Q4. Now, I have heard about a very exciting event you are organising, do tell?
Inspired by a hen weekend, myself and a friend of mine Rachel Kelly decided to organise a ladies night with all the trimmings! We both have wished to do some charity work but unfortunately with both of our careers we could not pack up and leave for Africa, which was our idea. So over a drink in Barcelona airport, we were inspired to combine our passions and came up with the Ultimate Ladies Night. It takes place on the 24th November in Morrison's Lounge Cannes. We have every ladies dream covered, happy hour all night for cocktails, great music, raffles with fantastic prizes and a male auction with a twist! Each man comes with a gift to present to his "mistress". These gifts have been generously donated and include interior design consultations, a weekend for two in Italy and a year's membership to Fitlane. All proceeds go to a new association called Fr.A.B.A. We plan to make it a fun filled night and a great excuse of women all over the region to dress up in their glitz and glam for a good cause.
Q5. The charity you have chosen is quite specific and certainly a well worth cause. Tell us why you chose it?
When deciding on a charity, Rachel and I both knew we wanted to do raise money for children. The owner of Morrison's suggested austim and after talking to some friends and patients, I was introduced to Sophie Laurent of Fr.A.B.A. From my training I was aware of A.B.A therapy of autism and have seen its benefits. After talking to Sophie, we were inspired by her enthusiasm and aims for this very young association.
Fr.A.B.A was set up to inform and educate parents of the use and benefits of ABA and also with the goal to set up an education centre for children with autism in Biot.

Q6. Has it been easy finding 'candidates' for this exciting auction?
Finding men has been such a fun experience and the guys out here have been surprisingly shy! Some have an air of confidence and sign themselves up straight away although then have second thoughts once we tell them what the evening involves! I have to admit, the men we have found have all been down to Rachel's powers of persuasion. So for the night, we have some good guys who really want to help the cause and raise as much money as possible. They all have great personalities, look good in a suit and we should have a great laugh on stage with them.
Q7. As a Riviera Woman, what is one of your favourite things about the Riviera?
As I mentioned before I love living beside the sea and smelling the sea air, so here in the south of France I have both to wake up to. But what is special about the riviera is the great sense of community among people which we have seen when organising the charity event. Everyone has been so helpful and generous not only in the way of donations, but also with what goes on before the night, printing, designing posters, organising publicity. We have a thank you list a mile long and we would not have been able to do the night without everyone's help.
Q8. Who is the person that inspires you the most and why?
I come from a family of strong women, who have always run their own business. Hearing stories about my grandmother and great grandmother and how they were, has shaped who I am today. However, my mum has to be the most inspirational woman. She is great in times of crisis and has an amazing inbuilt ability to calm me down no matter what is going on! Even planning this event and my mum being all the way back in Dublin, she has helped whenever I needed her. She had planned to be here on the 24th to support the cause but unfortunately cannot make it,so has donated a prize for the raffle instead.
My mum has taught me to always trust my instincts, treat others how you wish to be treated and has given me the belief that I can do anything I want to do in life. Without this belief I do not think I would have been able to study homeopathy, after being refused from one college for being too young, or even this event. However with support from my whole family and persistance, both have turned out for the best! I would not be where I am in life without these teachings and the support of my whole family.
